Whereas the affordable housing crisis and corresponding conditions of poverty and homelessness continue to worsen, with increasing numbers of residents sleeping rough; and Whereas there is reason to expect that there will continue to be residents of Brighton sleeping rough as we enter the Winter season, putting them at increased risk of harm or death; and Whereas the coming Winter season is mere months away, making this issue very time-sensitive; and Whereas the Municipality of Brighton has no emergency accommodations available to meet the needs of those residents; and Whereas any provision of shelter falls under the mandate of Northumberland County Social Services, and to be effective should be informed if not directed by County staff; and Insofar as the Municipality of Brighton, and the community of Brighton, are capable and willing to offer support to residents experiencing homelessness, we should do so; Therefore be it resolved that Council direct staff to engage with County Social Services staff to request and offer partnership on any initiative to support the unsheltered residents of Brighton; and Be It Further Resolved that this motion be circulated to other Northumberland municipalities and County Council; And Further that Council direct staff to provide a report to Council.
